Procedural radiology, sometimes called interventional radiology, involves using medical imaging—such as ultrasound, CT, or X-ray—to guide minimally invasive procedures. These procedures are usually performed to diagnose or treat a condition without the need for major surgery. You will be made comfortable on a procedure table while the radiologist uses imaging to accurately guide small instruments, such as needles or catheters, to the area of concern. Local anaesthetic is commonly used to numb the area, and most patients feel little discomfort. The procedures are generally quick, involve small incisions (if any), and often allow you to return to normal activities sooner than with traditional surgery. Your doctor will be able to review the results or outcomes once the procedure is complete.
