An ultrasound is a simple and painless test that uses sound waves to create images of the inside of your body. You will be asked to lie down, and a small amount of warm gel will be applied to the area being examined. A handheld device called a transducer is gently moved over your skin to capture the images. The scan is comfortable, does not use radiation, and you can breathe and talk normally throughout. Most ultrasound appointments take only a few minutes, and your doctor can review the results once the images are processed.
